About the role#
As a General Motors Economics Summer Intern, you will support strategic decision-making by analyzing the global macroeconomy, automotive markets, and public policy developments. You will apply your economics training and coding skills to support economic modeling, develop digital tools, and prepare written analysis for senior leaders. This is a hands-on, learning-focused opportunity to deepen your understanding of applied macroeconomics within a corporate economics team.
What you'll do#
- Support analysis of global and United States economic growth, inflation, labor markets, and household balance sheets.
- Analyze the outlook for the North American and global automotive industries.
- Evaluate the potential effects of public policy changes on General Motors, the industry, and customers.
- Draft concise briefing materials that communicate key economic insights to nontechnical audiences.
- Help build digital tools that automate the distribution of analysis on key economic indicators and industry metrics.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in economics or a closely related field with rigorous training in macroeconomics and econometrics.
- Master students must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2029; PhD students must be graduating between December 2027 and 2033.
- Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the 12-week Summer 2027 internship.
- Experience using at least one of the following programming languages or tools: R, Python, or Stata.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in the automotive industry, manufacturing, or industrial policy.
- Commitment to learning, openness to feedback, and a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Preferred experience includes EViews, MATLAB, economic forecasting, data visualization, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time, 12-week internship for Summer 2027.
- Start dates are May 24th and June 14th of 2027.
- This role follows a hybrid work arrangement. You are expected to report in person at least three days per week to either the Warren Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, or the General Motors Public Policy Office in Washington, D.C.
