    About the role#

    The Virginia Department of Transportation offers a paid summer internship for students interested in public service and engineering. This program provides guided work experience that connects academic theory with practical application.     What you'll do#

    • Apply engineering technology principles to assigned program areas.
    • Communicate with staff, consultants, and external contacts to resolve issues.
    • Prepare and maintain daily project documentation and accurate records.
    • Enter and update data to meet deadlines.
    • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment.
    • Follow guidelines for the storage, use, and transport of equipment.
    • Keep supervisors informed of field observations and project developments.
    • Project a positive image of the department.

    What you'll need#

    • Current full-time enrollment in an Associate degree program or higher.
    • Undergraduate students must maintain 12 credit hours per semester, and graduate students must maintain 9 credit hours.
    • Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
    • Proficiency with computers, MS Office, and smartphones.
    • Mathematics knowledge including algebra and geometry.
    • Ability to perform manual labor, such as handling and preparing material samples.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Must be at least 18 years old by the start of employment.
