About the role#
The Bank of Canada is hiring a student for the Macrofinancial Modelling and Research team. This role supports the Monetary Policy function by analyzing financial market data. You will work within a research environment to process large datasets and contribute to ongoing economic analysis.
What you'll do#
- Clean, structure, and document large-scale earnings call transcript data to build a reusable research dataset.
- Create and implement text-as-data methods to extract firm-level sentiment and business outlook topics.
- Explore the use of large language models within the secure research environment to assist with data analysis.
- Maintain documentation for code and data processes to ensure knowledge transfer within the department.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a PhD program for Statistics or Economics.
- Programming skills in Python, specifically using NLP libraries for tasks like tokenization, embeddings, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis.
- Experience collecting and organizing large volumes of unstructured text data.
- Familiarity with empirical research workflows, including data validation and reproducibility.
- Ability to explain technical findings to a non-technical audience.
- A commitment to learning and adapting methods from academic literature.

- Location: Ottawa, Ontario.
- Term: Winter 2026.
- Modality: Hybrid, with a minimum of 12 days per month on-site.
- Status: Full-time, paid position.
- Eligibility: Priority is given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You must be eligible to obtain Reliability security clearance.
