About the role#
The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) Public Defender Division in Norfolk County offers law students an opportunity to work on adult felony and misdemeanor cases. Interns work alongside lawyers, social workers, and investigators to provide legal representation in District and Superior Courts. This is an unpaid position for the Spring 2027 term, running from January through mid-May. All interns must attend a mandatory, intensive, multi-day training at the start of the program.
What you'll do#
- Perform legal research and draft pretrial motions, affidavits, and legal memoranda.
- Review evidence and correspond with clients and expert witnesses.
- Observe court proceedings, including trials, motions, and arraignments.
- Conduct client interviews and provide bail advocacy for those with SJC Rule 3:03 certification.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client information and case work.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a law student (rising 2L through 3L).
- Coursework in evidence, criminal law, constitutional law, critical legal theory, or trial advocacy.
- Ability to commit to at least two full days per week.
- Eligibility for SJC Rule 3:03 certification is preferred.
- Foreign language proficiency is a plus.

- Work Modality: On-site.

- Note: While a car is not required, personal transportation allows for broader experience, including visiting clients in various institutions and observing courts outside of Quincy.
