About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern at General Matter, you will gain hands-on experience designing, building, and testing the mechanisms and structures that enable our enrichment technology. You will work alongside engineers across electrical, software, manufacturing, and nuclear disciplines to solve technical problems and bring hardware from concept through to testing. This role offers the chance to contribute to real engineering projects while developing practical skills in design, prototyping, and cross-functional integration.
What you'll do#
- Support the design of mechanisms and mechanical structures for testing and enrichment.
- Help optimize designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability.
- Contribute to testing hardware through thermal, vibe, shock, and durability evaluations.
- Perform root-cause analysis on test failures and develop hardware mitigations.
- Work with electrical, software, manufacturing, and nuclear engineers to ensure designs meet system requirements.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical design, prototyping, or analysis of structural or mechanism components.
- Familiarity with CAD tools such as NX or SolidWorks.
- Exposure to FEA or engineering coding languages like Python or MATLAB.
- A strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.

- Compensation: $30 to $40 per hour, depending on academic standing.
