About the role#
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking a Student Assistant for the Counsel’s Office in Albany. This role supports departmental programs across the Land and Water Resources, Food Safety and Inspection, Plant Industry, and Animal Industry divisions. This is a full-time, temporary position for approximately 6-8 weeks.
What you'll do#
- Prepare legal analysis, memoranda, guidance, and position statements regarding agricultural districts, food safety, invasive species, and animal or plant diseases.
- Assist with FOIL requests, administrative guidelines, regulations, litigation papers, and conservation easements.
- Perform a mix of legal and paralegal duties to support the Counsel's Office.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least one year at a degree-granting college or university.
- A minimum GPA of 2.0.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Westlaw.
- Strong writing and research skills.
- Enrollment in a degree program, with relevant majors including Political Science, History, Agriculture, or Criminal Justice.
Location & details#
- The position is based in Albany, New York.
- Work is on-site with potential for hybrid telecommuting options per agency guidelines.
- This is a paid position working 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
