    About the role#

    The Children's Law Center is seeking candidates to sponsor for externally-funded public interest fellowships. We are looking for rising third-year law students, judicial clerks, and recent graduates interested in representing children under the age of 21 in New York City Family Courts. This position is contingent upon securing external sponsorship through programs like Equal Justice Works, the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, or law school-sponsored initiatives. Fellows will focus on areas including LGBTQ+ youth advocacy, mental health support, domestic violence and sexual abuse cases, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and education-related proceedings.

    What you'll do#

    • Represent children as subjects or parties in assigned cases, including trials and all related legal proceedings.
    • Conduct full factual investigations, including interviews with children, caretakers, and witnesses.
    • Perform legal research and writing, such as drafting memoranda of law, motions, and appellate briefs.
    • Make policy recommendations to support our clients and their families.
    • Work both independently and cooperatively with staff.
    • Maintain calendars and files according to office best practices.

    What you'll need#

    • A J.D. or an expected J.D. by the Fall of 2027.
    • A demonstrated commitment to public interest law and serving children from diverse, low-income backgrounds.
    • Strong legal practice and communication skills.
    • Familiarity with dispute resolution techniques and ethical professional conduct.
    • Ability to manage time effectively to handle a diverse and demanding caseload.
    • Respect for and ability to work with diverse populations.

    • Location: Brooklyn, New York.
    • Work Modality: On-site.
    • Status: Full-time.
