    About the role#

    Thea Energy is looking for an Integrated Modeling Intern to join the Physics team for the Fall 2026 term. This is a full-time, on-site internship based in Kearny, New Jersey. You will work on the design of fusion power plants by using AI and learned surrogates to navigate the stellarator design space.

    What you'll do#

    • Implement reduced models for physics phenomena and engineering systems.
    • Create coupled workflows of integrated models that include constrained numerical optimization of designs.
    • Train surrogate models using outputs from high-fidelity simulations.

    What you'll need#

    • Experience with toroidal plasma confinement devices.
    • Familiarity with constrained nonlinear numerical optimization.
    • Background in data science or machine learning.
    • Currently pursuing a degree in Physics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Kearny, New Jersey.
    • Work modality: On-site.
    • Term: Fall 2026.
    • Compensation: $18-25 per hour for undergraduates, $26-30 per hour for post-graduates.
    • Physical requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks like typing, standing, or sitting for long periods. You must be able to work in a facility with industrial hazards such as noise, fumes, high voltage, strong magnets, and cryogenics.

    Thea Energy develops fusion energy systems using arrays of magnets and software controls. The company focuses on commercial fusion as a source of zero-emission power. It was founded in 2022 as a spin-out from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Princeton University. The team is currently designing Eos, an integrated fusion system based on a planar coil stellarator architecture. The company is based in Kearny, New Jersey, and employs between 51 and 200 people.
