    About the role#

    Mechanical Engineer interns at Zipline work on projects that move from early concepts to field deployment. You will own specific problems, define system requirements, and build solutions that function in real-world conditions. This role requires a practical approach to engineering, where you will focus on burning down technical risk and improving system reliability.

    What you'll do#

    • Develop concepts and evaluate tradeoffs based on product and engineering requirements.
    • Design parts and assemblies using 2D and 3D CAD tools.
    • Build and test prototypes to gather data and refine designs.
    • Design and run electro-mechanical testers to verify component reliability.
    • Root cause failures and create tests to replicate failure modes.
    • Work cross-functionally with internal teams and suppliers to review and iterate on designs.
    • Document your work to ensure design choices are clear to the team.

    What you'll need#

    • Completion of at least the second year of undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering.
    • Strong grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including structural analysis and component integration.
    • Experience designing and building mechanical systems outside of the classroom.
    • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools.
    • Experience with automation using actuators and Raspberry Pi.
    • Ability to work on projects that integrate mechanical, electrical, and software elements.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, on-site internship based in South San Francisco, California.
    • The term for this position is Winter 2027.
    • This is a paid internship.
