About the role#
This paid internship at Alleghany Highlands Community Services offers Master's degree students hands-on experience in the public behavioral healthcare sector. You will work on-site in Covington, Virginia, to gain practical insight into mental health services while supporting adults and children. The position is available on a rolling basis.
What you'll do#
- Engage directly with clients to support their recovery and well-being.
- Deepen your understanding of mental health, substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and developmental disabilities.
- Learn to identify symptoms and explore various treatment modalities.
- Develop assessment and diagnostic skills under the guidance of professionals.
- Create person-centered service plans tailored to individual needs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master's degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Human Services.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, mental illness, and developmental or intellectual disabilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with basic office equipment such as scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
- Strong communication skills and a person-centric approach to care.
- Successful completion of a background check, social services review, and drug screen.
