About the role#
Barr is seeking a structural engineering intern for the summer of 2027 based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. You will support the structural engineering group on technical assignments related to hydropower facilities, wind turbine foundations, and industrial processing sites. This role involves contributing to structural design, preparing plans, and assisting with construction inspections. You will work closely with engineers and project managers to gain experience in a professional consulting environment.
What you'll do#
- Apply foundational engineering principles to assist with calculations and modeling for industrial and energy-related structures.
- Prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Contribute to project reports and help develop cost estimates for engineering solutions.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to observe construction activities and verify design intent.
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software to support project tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a civil engineering degree program with junior or senior standing.
- Completion of at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- At least one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
- Strong computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
- A current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

- Modality: Hybrid work arrangement available.
- Travel: Up to 30 percent travel and fieldwork may be required. Fieldwork may involve rough terrain, moving machinery, and outdoor conditions. You must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and use required personal protective equipment.
