About the role#
The Engineering Intern supports the Engineering Department in the planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects for the City of South Haven. You will work on technical and administrative tasks related to roadways, drainage systems, water and sewer utilities, the electric utility, and capital improvement projects. This role involves a mix of office duties and field work.
What you'll do#
- Support the Engineering Department in the planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of public infrastructure.
- Assist in preparing engineering drawings, maps, and reports using AutoCAD, ESRI/ArcGIS, or similar software.
- Conduct construction observation and field inspections for municipal systems like water, sewer, electric distribution, streets, and sidewalks.
- Collect, organize, and analyze field data for municipal infrastructure.
- Support the development of cost estimates, bid documents, and project specifications.
- Review development plans and permits for compliance with local codes and engineering standards.
- Assist with public works maintenance tracking and asset management.
- Perform administrative and research tasks to support engineering projects.
What you'll need#
- You must have completed at least your second year of college pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, construction management, land surveying, geographic information systems, or a related field.
- Strong academic standing with coursework in civil or electrical engineering is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with ESRI/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
- A basic understanding of civil or electrical engineering principles, municipal infrastructure systems, and construction practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to solve problems and work both independently and in a team.
- A current and valid State of Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record.
Location & details#
- Location: South Haven, Michigan.
- This is an on-site, full-time, paid, seasonal position with a rolling term.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, and you may be subject to cold and snowy weather conditions.
- You may be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
