    About the role#

    The Cook County Adult Probation Department provides a semester-long internship for students interested in the criminal justice system. This program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training to offer practical experience in courtroom procedures and case management. This is a paid position for the Fall 2026 term.

    What you'll do#

    You will shadow and assist an assigned probation officer. Your daily tasks include interviewing probationers, scoring risk and needs assessments, and completing supervision plans. You will conduct field visits, attend court hearings, and prepare necessary court documents. Classroom sessions will cover department policies and court processes.

    What you'll need#

    You must be an undergraduate student who has completed at least two years of study. Candidates need a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a major GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Eligible majors include Criminal Justice, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, and Business Administration.

    Required application materials include:

    • Official or unofficial college transcripts
    • Résumé and cover letter
    • A writing sample, such as a class paper
    • Two letters of recommendation (one academic and one from a supervisor)

    All applicants are subject to criminal background checks. Selected interns must attend a four-day orientation and complete at least 200 hours during the program.

    Location & details#

    This role is based in Chicago, Illinois. It is an on-site position. Employees must establish and maintain residency within the State of Illinois within six months of hire.
