    About the role#

    The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is seeking a Graduate Intern for the Special Collections Department. This role focuses on the digitization and processing of archival materials, specifically the library's photograph collection. You will work directly with the department head to support the care, preservation, and accessibility of historical resources.

    This is a 120-hour internship scheduled to begin in June 2026. The pay rate is $17.50 per hour.

    What you'll do#

    • Produce high-resolution scans of photographs and create corresponding metadata.
    • Organize and label digital files to ensure they are accessible to researchers.
    • Create at least five digital photograph collections for the library's online database, including curated descriptions and historical context.
    • Assist with the assessment and preservation of archival materials.
    • Provide research assistance to library patrons.
    • Participate in special projects as assigned by the department head.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Public History or Library Science, with an archival focus preferred.
    • A base knowledge of archival best practices, principles, and methods.
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems with guidance.
    • Experience with digitization projects is helpful but not required.
    • Proficiency with current computer programs.
    • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 40 pounds and working in environments that may contain dust or mold.
