About the role#
KBR is hiring a Data Science Intern to join a project at the NASA Ames Research Center. You will participate in the development of a risk assessment framework using aviation safety data. This position is part-time, and the time commitment is negotiable.
What you'll do#
- Develop data-mining and artificial intelligence techniques to extract safety-critical information from aviation accident and incident reports.
- Process reports from the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) databases.
- Identify safety events, contributing factors, causal relationships, and recurring patterns.
- Build an automated data-mining pipeline to extract and organize information.
- Analyze data to identify factor combinations, event frequencies, and trends.
- Translate findings into quantitative risk inputs, such as event likelihoods and conditional probabilities.
- Support the development of data-driven probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) models.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master’s or early PhD program in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Mathematics.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Background in Bayesian networks, graph structure, probability, and statistics.
- Experience working with large datasets.
- Interest in researching methods for data analysis and fault mode and effect analysis (FMEA).
- Software engineering skills, including the design of unit tests, performance profiling, optimization, and documentation.
Location & details#
- This role is on-site at Moffett Field, California, or Chicago, Illinois.
- This is a paid, part-time internship.
- Hiring is on a rolling basis.
