About the role#
Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories is looking for a graduate student to join our team for a 3-month internship. You will focus on developing multi-fidelity dynamic simulation methods for energy systems, such as HVAC cycles and multiphysics platforms. We are looking for senior PhD students in applied mathematics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
What you'll do#
- Develop multi-fidelity dynamic simulation methods for energy systems.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student.
- Hands-on experience with time-domain numerical simulation, including ODE/DAE integration, implicit or iterative solvers, and sparse linear algebra.
- Familiarity with model reduction or surrogate modeling.
- Solid understanding of thermofluids, including thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
- Strong programming skills in Python, Julia, or Matlab.
- A track record of rigorous research, such as published papers or robust software, is preferred.
- Experience with system identification, numerical optimization for dynamical systems, or equation-oriented tools like Modelica or Simscape is a plus.

- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: 3 months with a flexible start date.
- Compensation: 6,000 to 8,000 dollars per month.
- Benefits: Includes a relocation stipend, travel coverage, and a monthly Charlie Card for commuting. Health insurance is available after a 90-day waiting period.
- Sponsorship: MERL provides immigration support for qualified candidates as needed. Employment requires full authorization to work in the United States and compliance with export control regulations.
