About the role#
Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories is looking for an intern to join our research team. You will develop AI technologies that help humanoid robots understand, reason, and interact with the physical world. This role focuses on complex manipulation, assembly, and tool-use tasks. Our goal is to conduct high-impact research that leads to publications at premier AI and robotics conferences.
What you'll do#
- Develop AI technologies for humanoid robots.
- Contribute to research in embodied AI for dexterous manipulation, assembly, and tool use.
- Work on Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models and Foundation Models for robotic control.
- Develop World-Action Models (WAM) for long-horizon planning and decision making.
- Conduct learning from human demonstrations, teleoperation, and autonomous data collection.
- Perform sim-to-real transfer, reinforcement learning, and real-world robot deployment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Research experience in robotics, embodied AI, machine learning, or computer vision.
- Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or JAX.
- Familiarity with VLA models, Foundation Models, multimodal AI, reinforcement learning, or imitation learning.
- Knowledge of robot manipulation, motion planning, control, or agentic AI systems.
- Hands-on experience with humanoid or loco manipulators like the Unitree G1.
- Experience with teleoperation systems such as Pico or Sonic.
- Proficiency with robotics simulators including Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or Genesis.
- Familiarity with ROS or ROS 2, real-world experimentation, and policy deployment on edge AI devices like Jetson GPUs.

- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Duration: Approximately 4 months.
- Schedule: Full-time.
- Compensation: 6,000 to 8,000 dollars per month.
- Benefits: Relocation stipend, travel coverage, monthly Charlie Card, and health insurance for those meeting the 90-day waiting period.
