About the role#
The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice is hiring graduate students for a field research internship during the Fall 2026 semester. This role focuses on identifying and documenting the history of racially restrictive covenants in property deeds throughout New Jersey. You will contribute to our broader equity and justice initiatives while gaining experience in policy reform and community engagement.
What you'll do#
- Travel to county clerks offices across New Jersey to find, access, and copy property deeds that contain racially restrictive covenants.
- Research the history and prevalence of these covenants, including identifying specific trends, municipalities, and developers.
- Connect with community groups like historical societies, libraries, and advocacy organizations to gather relevant materials.
- Assist with data collection and ensure all records are organized and complete.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student in a field such as Political Science, Sociology, History, Communications, Public Health, or Human Resources.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage your time, and meet deadlines.
- High attention to detail when handling sensitive historical documents.
- Professional communication skills for interacting with public officials and community partners.
- A commitment to racial equity and the mission of the Institute.
- Ability to travel to different parts of the state, including South Jersey.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Newark, New Jersey.
- The role is hybrid, consisting of a mix of remote work and in-office or field hours.
- The internship lasts 14 weeks, requiring approximately 120 hours of work over the semester.
- This is a paid position at $20 per hour.
