About the role#
This is a per diem position for students currently enrolled in a Medical Technology program. You will work under the direction of licensed staff to perform simple laboratory procedures that do not require interpretation or resulting. This role provides hands-on experience in a hospital laboratory setting.
What you'll do#
- Retrieve samples from Specimen Processing and deliver them to the appropriate testing department.
- Sort and load samples onto lab automation systems.
- Perform daily sample pending reviews and locate missing samples to support testing operations.
- Maintain inventory by receiving and stocking items, checking expiration dates, and logging media and reagents.
- Monitor reagent levels and notify the appropriate person when supplies reach reorder points.
- Verify the functionality of support systems like water and deionized water systems and report deviations to leadership.
- Perform quality control checks on pipettes, timers, and balances.
- Assist with proficiency testing by receiving surveys, ordering in the LIS, and filing paperwork.
- Notify departments regarding the resolution of specimen discrepancies.
- Answer phone calls and alert leadership to any issues.
- Follow all departmental policies and safety procedures to reduce the risk of exposure to blood and body fluids.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Medical Technology program.
- Ability to understand written instructions and communicate information correctly.
- Data entry and computer skills.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and billing issues is preferred.
- Ability to perform medium work, including lifting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and frequent walking, standing, or squatting.
