About the role#
This position provides engineering support to the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Communications Division. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineering and scientific professionals on projects involving software, networking, cybersecurity, and test and evaluation. This is a part-time student role, limited to 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Provide engineering support in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
- Assist in the implementation of Software-Defined Radios (SDR) and MANET radios.
- Operate and navigate Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) for naval lab exercises.
- Develop software and scripts to automate tactical radio transmissions.
- Use Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) Viewer to assess and validate system security controls.
- Support communication systems operations, including Type 1 encrypted military radios and COMSEC protocols.
- Design training materials for tactical radio and satellite communications (SATCOM).
- Execute system simulations to evaluate SATCOM constraints and operational scenarios.
What you'll need#
- Senior level standing in an undergraduate program.
- Course work in the discipline requested on the task order.
- Preferred majors include Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics.
- Documented COMSEC training and qualification to operate Type 1 cryptographic devices.
- Proven hands-on experience with tactical military radios and SATCOM.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- US Citizenship is required.

- This is a hybrid position based in San Diego, California.
- You must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from San Diego State University.
- Work is performed primarily via routine telework, but you must be available to work at NIWC Pacific Bayside upon request.
- The hourly rate is $19.67.
