About the role#
This position provides engineering support to the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Communications Division. You will assist professional staff with software, networking, cybersecurity, and testing tasks related to software-defined radios and satellite communication systems. This role is designed to offer hands-on experience in a technical environment while supporting ongoing projects and lab exercises.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the implementation of Software-Defined Radios (SDR) and MANET radios.
- Operate Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) during naval lab exercises.
- Develop software and scripts to automate tactical radio transmissions.
- Execute system simulations to evaluate SATCOM constraints and operational scenarios.
- Use STIG Viewer to assess and implement system security controls.
- Manage COMSEC protocols and operate Type 1 encrypted military radios.
- Design training materials for tactical radio and satellite communications.
What you'll need#
- Must be a Junior or Senior level student.
- Course work in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics is preferred.
- Undergraduate Student II: Experience with 50% of task requirements and ability to work independently on 50% of tasks.
- Undergraduate Student III: Experience with 100% of task requirements and ability to work independently on 90% of tasks.
- Ability to operate Type 1 cryptographic devices.
- US Citizenship is required to meet Department of Defense regulations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.

- Location: San Diego, California.
- Modality: On-site at NIWC Pacific, Topside.
- Schedule: Full-time student position, limited to 20 hours per week.
- Compensation: $19.67 per hour.
- Residency: Must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from San Diego State University.
