About the role#
This position supports water contaminant research at the Naval Information Warfare Center, Pacific. You will help develop a machine learning pipeline to evaluate water quality, providing data to help commanders assess environmental risks. This is a part-time student role, capped at 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Prepare spatiotemporal data from satellites, buoys, and industrial or municipal sources.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and create data visualizations.
- Assist with coding, testing, and debugging a machine learning pipeline.
- Create data dictionaries, reports, and slide decks summarizing your findings.
- Conduct literature searches on Model Based Systems Engineering practices.
- Submit regular status and time reports.
What you'll need#
- Junior or Senior undergraduate status.
- A background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Environmental Engineering.
- Coursework in Python programming, probability and statistics, and object-oriented programming.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
- US Citizenship is required to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.

- This is a hybrid position based in San Diego, California.
- You must live within a commutable distance of San Diego State University.
- Work is primarily virtual, but you must be able to work at the NIWC Pacific Bayside location when requested.
- Employment is contingent upon a background check and the ability to obtain a security clearance.
