About the role#
Lightmatter is looking for a PhD candidate or recent graduate in Electrical Engineering or Physics to join our team as a Photonics Characterization Intern or New Grad. You will work with silicon photonics components and help us test and characterize our hardware. This role starts in January 2026 and requires an analytical mindset to solve technical problems in a laboratory setting.
What you'll do#
- Conduct electro-optic testing and characterization of silicon photonics components, such as micro-rings and Mach-Zehnder interferometers.
- Operate optical equipment including lasers, electro-optic modulators, semiconductor optical amplifiers, PIN receivers, and various analyzers.
- Use semiconductor test equipment like vector network analyzers, source-meter units, arbitrary waveform generators, and high-speed oscilloscopes.
- Design and execute testing protocols for chips and subsystems.
- Develop and implement automated testing and system interfacing using Python scripting.
What you'll need#
- Recent PhD graduate or current PhD candidate in Photonics.
- Strong understanding of Silicon Photonics.
- Experience with electro-optic component testing in a graduate level lab.
- Proficiency in developing automated testing systems with Python.
- Ability to translate complex data into actionable strategies.
- Experience with high-speed instruments, high-speed communications, and VNA/optical links.
- Knowledge of high-speed PCBs or micro-electronics.
- Familiarity with microcontroller programming.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to learn.

- Compensation: $53 to $65 per hour.
