About the role#
This one-year fellowship offers reporters the chance to produce signature investigative work focused on Mississippi or Louisiana. You will work under the guidance of veteran editors to develop your investigative skills and journalistic judgment. Fellows are based in their local communities and will make periodic trips to company offices for training and support. This is a full-time, paid role represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
What you'll do#
- Produce investigative journalism focused on your state or region for publication by The Times.
- Learn the skills and techniques required to excel at investigative reporting.
- Demonstrate a commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth.
What you'll need#
- Three to five years of professional experience as a reporter covering a beat for a local newspaper or digital news outlet.
- Status as an independent journalist or employment at a newsroom willing to provide a yearlong sabbatical.
- Significant experience covering a beat, paired with a specific investigative story idea that you have not yet had the resources or support to pursue.

- This role is based on-site in Mississippi or Louisiana.
