    About the role#

    The AI Engineer Intern supports the Digital Technology organization at Amtrak. You will work under the guidance of senior engineers to connect AI capabilities to business processes. This role provides exposure to how AI-driven workflows are set up, tested, and monitored. You will build foundational skills in automation, documentation, and platform support.

    What you'll do#

    • Build small features or components that add new AI-driven capabilities to Amtrak systems.
    • Develop and test automation scripts or workflow pieces to support AI capabilities.
    • Assist senior engineers with connecting new AI capabilities to existing business processes.
    • Investigate recurring issues or inefficiencies in AI workflows.
    • Monitor AI capabilities in day-to-day use and identify root causes for issues.
    • Maintain documentation for capabilities, workflows, and resolved issues.
    • Participate in team meetings, demos, and project retrospectives.

    What you'll need#

    • Current pursuit of a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
    • Completion of at least 1 year of undergraduate studies or sophomore status.
    • A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
    • Basic familiarity with programming or scripting concepts.
    • Basic understanding of cloud-based systems and version control.

    • Location: Washington, DC.
    • Term: Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Employment: Full-time, paid internship.
    • Compensation: $18.00 to $35.00 per hour, based on school year and program of study.
    • Perks: Amtrak rail pass privileges and one PTO day per academic year.
