About the role#
Bascom Hunter is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the design, development, analysis, and testing of aerospace and defense systems. You will gain hands-on experience with thermal management systems, precision rotating machinery, mechanical packaging, and ruggedized electronic systems. This role involves working with multidisciplinary teams across the full development lifecycle, from initial concepts to final testing and documentation.
What you'll do#
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems.
- Create 3D models and mechanical packaging concepts using SolidWorks or other CAD tools.
- Support structural, thermal, and fluid analysis to optimize performance.
- Assist with thermal system and precision rotating machinery development, including compressor projects.
- Conduct research to help solve technical engineering challenges.
- Support prototype fabrication, assembly, and testing.
- Assist with experiments, data collection, and the interpretation of test results.
- Evaluate materials and manufacturing processes for performance, weight, and durability.
- Help build out engineering laboratory and test capabilities.
- Prepare technical documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports.
- Collaborate with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to support integrated system development.
- Ensure designs meet aerospace and defense industry standards.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with Junior or Senior standing preferred.
- Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling software, specifically SolidWorks.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
- Experience with mechanical design, prototyping, fabrication, or testing.
- Knowledge of thermal systems, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, or precision rotating machinery.
- Familiarity with materials and manufacturing processes in aerospace or defense.
- Experience with engineering analysis, simulation tools, programming, or data analysis.
- Previous internship, research, laboratory, or project team experience.
