About the role#
As a Student Personal Trainer, you will design and lead one-on-one or small group fitness sessions at the Cal Poly Recreation Center. You are responsible for guiding clients through their fitness journeys, from initial program design to teaching proper equipment etiquette. This role involves building professional relationships with participants and ensuring a safe, inclusive environment for everyone in the facility.
What you'll do#
- Create and implement personalized workout programs tailored to individual client goals.
- Teach clients how to use cardiovascular, resistance, and free weight equipment safely.
- Provide guidance on exercise physiology, lifting techniques, and basic diet recommendations.
- Maintain accurate client files according to industry standards.
- Lead personal training workshops and outreach events.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
- Monitor the fitness area to ensure safety and enforce facility policies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Cal Poly student (minimum 6 units for undergraduates, 4 units for graduate students).
- A nationally recognized Personal Trainer Certification (NASM, ACSM, NSCA, ACE, or similar).
- Strong knowledge of kinesiology and exercise physiology.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to connect with a diverse population.
- Current American Red Cross certification in Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid (required within 30 days of hire).
- Previous experience instructing in a fitness setting is preferred.
