    About the role#

    The Right Whale Ecology Program monitors North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay and nearby waters. This intern works with the marine ecologist to gather data on whale abundance, behavior, and prey. You will spend time on research vessels and in the laboratory. This is a full-time, paid position for the winter 2027 term. You will work an average of 40 hours per week, which includes weekends and holidays based on weather and field needs.

    What you'll do#

    • Participate in research cruises as a marine observer.
    • Collect data on marine mammal behavior, sightings, and environmental conditions.
    • Perform zooplankton collection and identification.
    • Process zooplankton samples independently in the lab.
    • Maintain vessel field equipment.
    • Enter and maintain data in the program database.
    • Assist with photo-analysis to match right whale individuals.

    What you'll need#

    • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in biological or environmental sciences.
    • Experience working on boats and the ability to withstand harsh elements for up to 10 hours.
    • You must not be prone to serious seasickness.
    • Strong attention to detail and good memorization skills.
    • Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office programs like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to work well in a team and under pressure.
    • Enthusiasm for learning field and lab research methods.
    • Preferred: Experience with plankton identification, microscopy, and marine observation.
    • A valid US driver’s license is preferred.

    Location & details#

    • This position is located in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
    • The term runs from January 4, 2027, through May 28, 2027.
    • Pay is $15 per hour, and housing is provided.
    • International applicants must secure their own visas or required documentation.
