About the role#
This is an 8-month co-op position for Winter and Summer 2027. You will work with the Ciena R&D team to support the development of test hardware and software for new products. This role involves hands-on lab work to design and debug hardware while implementing software solutions in an automated test environment. You will gain experience in the full development process, from initial prototypes to production.
What you'll do#
- Implement software sequences and algorithms to test electrical PCBs.
- Run test sequences on initial prototypes to verify correct operation.
- Assist in the design and development of test hardware solutions, including PCB design.
- Collaborate with R&D teams to understand design requirements, specifications, and test parameters.
- Document test procedures for internal and external use.
- Use internal data and analytics tools to interpret test parameters and limits.
- Provide feedback on circuit operation and target specifications.
- Adjust automated tests based on your analysis.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
- Proficiency in C#, C, Python, and Matlab.
- Experience with Linux development and command-line scripting for Linux and Windows.
- Ability to read and understand schematics.
- Knowledge of data protocols including I2C, I3C, SPI, MDIO, 1-wire, SGMII, and PCIE.
- Understanding of analog and digital circuits.
- Experience probing and debugging PCBs in a lab setting.
- Familiarity with lab equipment such as DMMs, SMUs, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, and Network Analyzers.
- Experience with in-circuit device programming using C2, PMBUS, or UART interfaces.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain test solutions clearly.
- A focus on detailed problem solving.
