About the role#
As a Chemical Engineering intern or co-op, you will gain hands-on experience with refinery operations by working alongside professional teams. You will become familiar with process equipment, build critical thinking skills, and see how different engineering disciplines collaborate. Most interns work in multiple areas of the refinery to develop a broad understanding of plant operations. You will also have the opportunity to improve your written and verbal presentation skills in a professional setting.
What you'll do#
Most interns and co-ops join one of the following functional areas:
- Process / Technical Service Engineers: Work on projects in the Technical Services Department with a mentor to apply classroom knowledge. Tasks include developing and leading test runs to optimize operations, performing process engineering calculations, and monitoring catalysts and adsorbents.
- Operations Research Engineers: Assist in developing planning, blending, scheduling, and process models to optimize crude oil purchasing and refinery production. You may also validate production data and develop graphical interfaces for process units.
- Environmental Engineers: Work on compliance projects across the refinery. You will apply engineering principles to environmental tasks, perform process calculations for Risk Management Plans, and participate in inspections or testing.
- Products Control / Economics Engineers: Analyze refinery process flow data, monitor tank farm operations, and gain exposure to refinery economics. You may also update data for gasoline blends and develop applications to assist in operating decisions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Chemical Engineering degree program.
- Strong academic performance.
- A valid driver's license.
- Authorization to work in the US on a full-time, indefinite basis without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
