About the role#
The Memphis Zoo offers an internship with the Pachyderm team. You will work alongside keepers to learn about elephant husbandry, training, medical procedures, and habitat maintenance. While the focus is on five geriatric African elephants, you will also gain experience with Southern White Rhinos, Grant's Zebra, and Scimitar-Horned Oryx. This is an unpaid position.
What you'll do#
- Assist with formal and informal public presentations to engage zoo guests.
- Observe animal behavior and report any signs of illness or irregularities to staff.
- Prepare daily diets and maintain accurate care records.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures according to written safety protocols.
- Complete a special project focused on research, observations, or enrichment.
What you'll need#
- You must be a college student who has completed at least one year of study, or a recent graduate.
- Preferred majors include Biology, Environmental Engineering, Psychology, or Nursing.
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week for a 10-12 week period.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
- Enthusiasm and good judgment when interacting with children and guests.
- You must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check and TB screening.
Location & details#
- This role is based on-site in Memphis, Tennessee.
- The term for this position is Fall 2026.
- You will frequently work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and humidity.
- The role requires physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
