    About the role#

    Pacific Fusion is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to contribute to the development of commercial fusion energy. You will own a project through the planning, design, assembly, and testing phases. This role provides experience in cradle to grave design and hands-on system building. You will work on high-priority projects that contribute to the development of our fusion system.

    What you'll do#

    • Own a project through the planning, design, assembly, and testing phases.
    • Perform cradle to grave design work.
    • Build and test systems.
    • Work on a variety of meaningful projects across the target area engineering team.
    • Design, build, and operate test stands and experimental hardware.
    • Write build instructions, procedures, and test plans.
    • Make design tradeoffs against requirements.

    What you'll need#

    • Junior or Senior standing in a 4-year Mechanical Engineering program.
    • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals and first principles.
    • Clear, confident written and verbal communication skills.
    • Working knowledge of stress analysis, including hand calculations and FEA.
    • Working knowledge of 2D drawings and design for manufacturing and assembly.
    • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks.
    • Hands-on mechanical design experience through coursework, clubs, research, or personal projects.
    • Experience with conventional machining, shop tools, and rapid prototyping.
    • Strong measurement, documentation, and data analysis skills.
    • Experience with CAD, MATLAB, Python, or Excel.
    • Curiosity, humility, and a desire to both teach and learn.
    • 6+ months of prior internship, co-op, or substantial project experience.
    • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
    • Experience or strong interest in kinematics, structures, or robotics.

    • Term: Summer 2027.
    • Work Modality: On-site.
    • Locations: San Leandro, CA or Fremont, CA.
    • Duration: Full time for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks.
    • Compensation: Paid position.
    • Note: This position requires U.S. Person status for export control compliance. Sponsorship is not available.
