About the role#
Shulman & Partners LLP is hiring an Articling Student for our Ottawa office. This role is for a student who wants to become a family lawyer and is eager to learn through hands-on work. You will work within our mentorship model, receiving guidance from senior lawyers to build your competency and confidence. You will gain exposure to drafting, research, client communication, and file progression.
What you'll do#
- Support lawyers on active family law matters with ongoing mentorship.
- Conduct legal research, interpret legislation, and summarize case law.
- Draft court and settlement materials, such as pleadings, affidavits, briefs, and correspondence.
- Assist with the review of financial disclosure and the preparation of financial statements.
- Prepare materials for mediations, conferences, motions, and trials.
- Attend court and dispute resolution processes to observe or participate where permitted.
- Communicate with clients, counsel, and court staff.
- Coordinate with clerks and administrative support to ensure tasks are accurate and on time.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited JD program and eligibility to article in Ontario through the LSO.
- Strong judgment and the ability to handle sensitive client matters with confidentiality.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- A high standard for accuracy in research, drafting, and reviewing evidence.
- A genuine interest in family law and a drive to learn and take feedback.
- Reliability in meeting deadlines and organizing tasks.
