About the role#
The Pavement Research Laboratory Intern supports research and mixture design initiatives for asphalt mixtures and binders. You will work primarily in a laboratory setting with occasional travel for field work. This role involves hands-on testing, data collection, and collaboration across the research team and operating companies.
What you'll do#
- Perform aggregate and asphalt mixture sampling and testing, including fractionation, gradation, and gravities.
- Prepare mixes through batching and conduct bituminous specimen fabrication.
- Execute industry-standard quality control procedures and maintain accurate records.
- Assist with basic data analysis and report findings to the team.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory and field equipment while keeping the workspace clean.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Follow all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment.
- Collect and analyze samples from various locations.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior.
- Major in civil engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, construction management, material sciences, or mechanical engineering.
- Basic math and Excel skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate clearly.
- Interest in working with your hands and performing on-site tasks.
- 1+ years of laboratory experience is preferred.

- Physical requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, frequent standing and walking, and comfort working in a dusty environment.
