About the role#
The Institute for Social Research at Sacramento State is hiring 25 student assistants for the Young Adult Tobacco Purchase Survey Project. The goal is to assess the rate of tobacco sales to individuals under the age of 21 across California. You will work as a secret shopper to attempt tobacco purchases at retail locations while a research partner records the results. This is a part-time, temporary, and non-benefited position.
What you'll do#
- Travel to predetermined store locations throughout California by car or plane. You do not need to drive.
- Attempt to purchase traditional or electronic tobacco products.
- Communicate field observations to your research partner.
- Follow project protocols and instructions provided by your research partner.
- Attend debrief meetings immediately after each trip.
- Maintain accurate records of travel expenses, purchase logs, and hours worked.
- Sit for extended periods while traveling between sites.
What you'll need#
- You must be 18 to 19 years of age.
- Availability for periodic travel on weekends and over school breaks.
- Ability to travel as a passenger in a rental car or plane.
- Reliability and dependability for all scheduled travel.
- Ability to follow all study protocols as directed by your supervisor or research partner.
- While all majors are welcome, coursework in research methods or equivalent experience is preferred.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Sacramento, California.
- Work is performed in a traveling environment and an office setting.
- The schedule is flexible, though most travel occurs on weekends and school breaks.
- Casual employees are limited to 19.5 hours per week. Student assistants generally work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
