About the role#
This Nurse Extern II role is based in the Cardiac Surgical Step Down unit at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. It is designed for students graduating in December 2026 who want to build a foundation for their future nursing career. You will work alongside a supportive team in a 48-bed unit that handles patients before and after heart surgery, heart transplants, and ventricular assist device procedures. This position requires an 8-hour weekly commitment until graduation.
What you'll do#
- Assist with activities of daily living, vital sign checks, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the nursing team to establish patient care plans based on health and developmental needs.
- Evaluate how patients respond to interventions and communicate your observations.
- Administer medication when delegated by a Registered Nurse.
- Manage an increasing patient load while practicing time management.
- Collect and synthesize patient data to identify specific needs.
- Participate in emergency situations under appropriate supervision.
- Perform patient positioning and transport duties using proper lifting techniques.
- Develop delegation skills for working with nursing assistants and technical staff.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program, specifically in your final year.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that covers pharmacological concepts.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities or interruptions.
- Nursing Assistant certification is preferred.
- Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting up to 50 lbs and performing sliding transfers.

- Location: Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- Schedule: Part-time, 8 hours per week required.
- Start dates: August 10, 2026, or August 24, 2026.
- Pay range: $21.85 to $32.80 per hour.
