About the role#
We are looking for a Backend Engineer Intern to help build the systems that power Fortnite. You will join the team responsible for managing FNCS tournaments, player cosmetics, and persistent LEGO Fortnite worlds. You will own a specific feature during the development cycle and participate in the daily operations of the team.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to the backend systems that power Fortnite experiences.
- Learn about security, scalability, and maintainability in your code.
- Collaborate with a team of experienced engineers.
- Work with Fortnite product owners and producers to build solutions for upcoming seasons.
What you'll need#
- Proficiency in Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools like Claude code.
- Ability to communicate effectively and provide task updates in a remote-first team environment.
- Willingness to ask questions, seek guidance, and learn from feedback.
- Foundational analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies, particularly AWS (preferred).
- Familiarity with *nix based systems (plus).
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- The role is remote, though the position is based in Cary, North Carolina.
- We are currently accepting applicants on a rolling basis.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
