    About the role#

    This practicum provides an opportunity to gain field experience in public health by working alongside mentors. You will work with the Department of Health and Wellness, the Department of Agriculture, and other partners. The role focuses on protecting the public from health hazards and involves gaining experience in communicable disease prevention, infection control, and outbreak investigation. This is a 16-week paid, full-time position starting in late September 2026.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist Public Health Inspectors with compliance inspections and audits in settings like food service establishments, daycares, long term care homes, and summer camps.
    • Help develop and maintain proper food handling practices and sanitary conditions.
    • Conduct compliance inspections for public drinking water supplies, wastewater, and solid waste disposal.
    • Participate in outreach and educational functions.
    • Report and make recommendations to ensure public protection through investigations and certificate applications.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a full-time Public Health program accredited by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
    • Preference is given to students who have recently completed their final year of study.
    • Ability to assess health risks and provide recommendations on complex public health issues.
    • Experience in a client service-based industry.
    • Professionalism when handling sensitive situations.
    • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable motor vehicle, as travel is required.

    Location & details#

    • This position is located in Nova Scotia, Canada.
    • Two positions are available, one in the Central Region (Bedford) and one in the Eastern Region (Sydney).
    • Work is on-site.
    • A criminal record check or vulnerable sector check may be required.
