About the role#
This internship focuses on the design, development, and improvement of packaging solutions for food products. You will work on projects that directly impact product safety, shelf life, and consumer appeal while gaining hands-on experience in research and development.
What you'll do#
- Enter data into the packaging specification database system.
- Evaluate barrier and abuse characteristics of various packaging materials.
- Collaborate with suppliers regarding packaging systems.
- Coordinate machine trial orders for label development.
- Assist Packaging Engineers with abuse tests, including drop, vibration, and shipping tests.
- Help design packaging options for point of purchase and club store displays.
- Prepare technical reports documenting test results.
- Complete a research project focused on packaging development.
What you'll need#
- Major in Packaging Engineering with an expected graduation date in August 2027, December 2027, or May 2028.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, persuasive skills, strong work ethic, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Access to a personal motor vehicle for transportation to and from the workplace.
- Comfort with the preparation and consumption of various Hormel Foods products, including pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and nuts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, is preferred.
- Experience in food manufacturing, meat processing, laboratory testing, or product development is a plus.
Location & details#
- Position is located on-site in Austin, Minnesota.
- This is a full-time, 40-hour per week summer internship.
- The program runs from late May 2027 through mid-August 2027.
- Travel to manufacturing facilities may be required.
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and will not require visa sponsorship.
