    About the role#

    The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares refugee youth to succeed in the New York City public school system. As a Photography Teaching Assistant Intern, you will support the lead photography instructor in a class designed for newcomer youth. You will help students develop creative skills and document their personal experiences through photography. This role involves working directly with refugee and immigrant youth in an educational, nonprofit setting.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist the lead photography instructor in facilitating weekly lessons.
    • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students during class activities.
    • Accompany the group on photography field trips.
    • Assist with file management, including organizing, labeling, and archiving student images.
    • Support equipment management and maintenance, including cameras, tripods, and lighting.
    • Help students with photo editing software.
    • Document project activities and assist with exhibit planning.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in or graduation from a college or master’s program in Photography, Art, Design, Media Studies, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 1 year of coursework in photography or visual arts.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience using DSLR cameras.
    • A portfolio of 5 to 10 original images demonstrating a strong understanding of composition, lighting, and visual storytelling.
    • Fluency in written and verbal English.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a classroom setting.
