    About the role#

This internship places doctoral candidates directly into active design and research efforts within the optical team. You will work on silicon photonics, coherent DSP, PAM4 signal processing, and co-packaged optics integration. Projects are selected to align with pressing optical engineering challenges and your doctoral research. You will see your work move from research into production silicon deployed at scale.

    What you'll do#

    • Design, simulate, and characterize silicon photonics components and subsystems, including modulators, photodetectors, waveguides, and optical engines.
    • Develop and validate DSP algorithms for high-speed optical links, such as equalization, FEC, and signal integrity techniques.
    • Perform optical system modeling and link budget analysis for data center interconnects and co-packaged optics.
    • Collaborate with analog IC design, packaging, and systems engineering teams to build integrated transceiver solutions.
    • Characterize and validate designs in the lab using high-speed test equipment and optical measurement tools.
    • Participate in a structured design curriculum and present research findings to the engineering team.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
    • Research focus and hands-on experience in photonics, optical communications, or high-speed signal processing.
    • Strong fundamentals in photonics and electromagnetics, including waveguide theory, modulator physics, and photodetector design.
    • Ability to use simulation and modeling tools like FDTD, MODE, Lumerical, or MATLAB with independence.
    • Experience with silicon photonics device design, transceiver systems, or DSP algorithm development.
    • Familiarity with PAM4 or coherent modulation formats, FEC, or DSP equalization techniques is preferred.
    • Exposure to co-packaged optics, near-packaged optics, or optical engine integration is a plus.
    • Familiarity with analog IC design or mixed-signal circuits related to optical transceiver front-ends.

    Location & details#

    • Locations: Santa Clara, CA; Irvine, CA; Austin, TX; Morrisville, NC; Westlake Village, CA; Chandler, AZ; Westborough, MA; Burlington, VT; Boise, ID.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Term: Rolling.
    • Employment: Full-time.
    • Compensation: Paid internship.
