    About the role#

The Grid Optimization and Control Group is seeking an intern to support the development of composite data center load models for transmission planning studies. This role focuses on building and validating both detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) models and RMS-based phasor models to represent the electrical characteristics of modern data centers. As data centers grow as critical loads on the grid, this work directly contributes to improving reliability, stability, and protection strategies for transmission systems.

    What you'll do#

    • Gather and analyze technical data on data center electrical architecture, including UPS systems, PDUs, cooling systems, and backup generation.
    • Develop and validate component-level models and build a composite data center load model that integrates IT load, power electronic interfaces, and motor-driven auxiliaries.
    • Implement detailed EMT models in simulation platforms to capture fast transients and fault behavior.
    • Build corresponding RMS phasor models for transmission planning tools to enable computationally efficient studies.
    • Document modeling methods, assumptions, and validation results in a clear and reproducible format.

    What you'll need#

    • Completed an undergraduate degree in power systems, electrical engineering, or related field.
    • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a master's or PhD program.
    • Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with power electronics, machines, and drives.
    • Strong programming and analytical skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
    • Familiarity with phasor-domain tools such as PSS®E or PSLF is preferred.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Golden, Colorado.
    • Modality: Remote and on-site options available.
    • Term: 6-12 month internship.
    • Employment: Full-time (40 hours per week).
    • Note: This position is subject to Department of Energy access restrictions and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification card.
