About the role#
The Consumer Protection Unit assists unrepresented litigants involved in consumer debt cases within New York City Civil Courts. Interns gain hands-on experience by working directly with clients and supporting ongoing litigation. You will work under the supervision of attorneys to handle case management and legal tasks. This position is unpaid.
What you'll do#
- Conduct client intake and interviews.
- Perform legal research and writing.
- Draft demand letters, pleadings, and motion papers.
- Appear in court to defend debt collection actions under attorney supervision.
- Negotiate with opposing counsel and argue before judges.
- Create legal self-help and reference materials.
- Manage administrative tasks including data entry, file management, and logging retainers.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a law student.
- Proficiency in legal research and writing.
- Ability to draft pleadings and conduct client interviews.
- Spanish language skills are highly preferred.
