About the role#
As a Metallurgical Engineering Intern at Solcoa Industries, you will join our process team to turn rare earth magnet waste into high-purity metals. You will work alongside metallurgists, chemists, and technicians to help us move from lab scale to production. This is an on-site role based in Alameda, California.
What you'll do#
- Assist with high-temperature and high-vacuum reactor operations.
- Characterize feed materials and products using ICP-OES, SEM-EDS, and LECO O/N equipment.
- Run furnace cycles, collect process data, and summarize results to inform design iterations.
- Maintain logs of process parameters, equipment conditions, and sample tracking.
- Support maintenance for vacuum systems, induction coils, thermocouples, and gas handling systems.
- Contribute to safety and continuous improvement on the facility floor.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a BS or MS in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Physics.
- Exposure to pyrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, or high-temperature processing through coursework or labs.
- Hands-on experience from labs, foundry work, internships, or personal projects involving furnaces, casting, or heat treatment.
- Disciplined documentation skills and reliable follow-through.
- Comfort working in a hardware-centric environment where you are willing to get your hands dirty.
- Preferred skills include experience with vacuum furnace operation, rare-earth metallurgy, thermodynamic analysis, welding, machining, or data analysis using Python or MATLAB.
