About the role#
As a Material Science Co-op student, you will join our Materials and Dimensional lab. You will help ensure that production and prototype parts meet specifications and assist in investigating part failures that occur in the field. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Kitchener, Ontario.
What you'll do#
- Read and interpret drawings, standard work instructions, work specifications, and procedures.
- Section components and prepare samples by mounting, polishing, and etching.
- Analyze metallurgy and perform surface hardness and case depth analysis.
- Collect, record, and enter data into the process database.
- Setup, calibrate, and maintain the tools, equipment, systems, and machines used in the lab.
- Maintain, service, and repair gauges and standards.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Materials Engineering Technologist diploma or Bachelor’s degree program, specifically 3rd or 4th year students.
- Knowledge of microscopic evaluation of steel.
- Experience preparing samples of ferrous alloys.
- Familiarity with using acids for micro and macro etching.
- Ability to operate Rockwell and micro-hardness testers.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- A self-motivated approach to taking on technical tasks and the ability to quickly learn new concepts and systems.
Location & details#
- This position is located in Kitchener, Ontario.
- The role is on-site with no remote or hybrid options.
- This is a paid position with wages ranging from $23 to $29 per hour, based on your year of study.
- You will receive 6% vacation pay on each pay cheque.
