About the role#
This is a part-time, temporary student assistant position with University Enterprises, Inc. You will work in a learning capacity under the supervision of a Senior Bridge Engineer in Structure Construction. The role involves supporting transportation engineers in both office and field settings. You must reside and work in California throughout your employment.
What you'll do#
- Perform construction inspection for public works projects, including bridges, buildings, walls, and drainage structures.
- Assist with calculations for grade, stress, deflection, alignment, and quantity estimates.
- Review contractor submittals such as falsework plans, shoring plans, demolition plans, and concrete mix designs.
- Prepare contract change orders, estimates, and technical documentation.
- Conduct sampling and controlled tests to verify the performance of construction materials.
- Verify field dimensions and ensure contractor compliance with plans and safety regulations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student at an accredited institution, majoring in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Enrollment in at least six semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students, or four semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
- Knowledge of stress analysis, strength of materials, and properties of construction materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and other engineering software.
Location & details#
- Location: Merced, California.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible, Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM. Students typically work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
- Work environment: You will spend time in both an office and a field setting. Field work requires comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
