About the role#
The Institute for Social Research at Sacramento State is hiring 20 assistants for the Young Adult Tobacco Purchase Survey Project. This project assesses tobacco sales to individuals under 21 across California. You will travel with a secret shopper partner to conduct field observations at retail locations. This is a part-time, temporary, and paid position running from January 2027 through May 2027.
What you'll do#
- Travel by car or plane to retail locations throughout California.
- Coordinate travel plans and drive rental cars for the research team.
- Conduct field observations and accurately enter purchase attempt data into a tablet.
- Ensure your secret shopper partner follows all project protocols and procedures.
- Communicate with staff to relay travel updates or data-related circumstances.
What you'll need#
- You must be 21 years of age or older.
- You must be legally eligible to drive in California and maintain a good driving record.
- You must be available for travel on weekends and during school breaks.
- You must be able to submit verification of your legal right to work in the United States.

- This role is based in Sacramento, California.
- Work is on-site and involves travel throughout the state.
- This position is open to both students and non-students.
- The term covers Winter 2027 and Spring 2027.
