About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship offers a hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to real-time emergency care. This program is designed to help you build a foundation in the field and determine if emergency medicine is the right career path for you.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist under mentorship.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of an emergency care setting.
- Explore if emergency medicine is the future you want to pursue.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours.
- A current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours and lift up to 25 kg independently.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
