    About the role#

    This is a paid, full-time summer 2027 internship with the Virginia Department of Transportation. You will gain practical experience that connects your academic studies with real-world engineering projects. The role focuses on public service and technical skill development within our organization.

    What you'll do#

    • Communicate with VDOT staff, consultants, and external contacts to resolve issues and share observations.
    • Apply engineering technology principles to assigned program areas.
    • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment, including following guidelines for storage and transport.
    • Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities.
    • Maintain accurate records and update data to meet project requirements.
    • Perform manual labor tasks such as securing, handling, and preparing material samples.

    What you'll need#

    • Current full-time enrollment in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
    • Undergraduate students must take 12 or more credit hours per semester, and graduate students must take 9 or more credit hours.
    • Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
    • Knowledge of mathematics, specifically algebra and geometry.
    • Proficiency with computers, MS Office, and smartphones.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
