    About the role#

    The Virginia Department of Transportation is hiring for a summer internship in the Culpeper District Traffic Section. This role reports to the District Traffic Engineer and provides hands-on experience with traffic studies, safety programs, and engineering projects. This is a paid, full-time position for Summer 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Apply engineering technology principles to assigned program areas.
    • Interpret and apply policies and procedures to daily work.
    • Communicate with VDOT staff, consultants, and external contacts.
    • Prepare and maintain daily project documentation and records.
    • Enter and update data to meet deadlines.
    • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment.
    • Observe traffic studies, safety programs, and projects.
    • Proactively resolve issues and perform special duties as assigned.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled full-time in an Associate degree program or higher, with at least rising sophomore status.
    • Maintain full-time status of 9+ credit hours for graduate students or 12+ credit hours for undergraduates before and after the internship.
    • At least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
    • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and mathematics up to geometry and algebra.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
    • Proficiency with MS Office, general computer software, and smartphones.
    • Ability to perform manual labor, such as handling and preparing material samples.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently, collaborate in teams, and make timely decisions.
